The Question
From The Quiet Life with Susan Cain
We love questions here at L’Chaim: The Jewish Letters Project. One of the pleasures in Questionland (I just made up this word, and why not?) is discovering other writers who have shared compelling questions—the kind that make you stop in your tracks. Before addressing one such question, I will pause for a moment to spotlight Susan Cain, the author of Quiet : The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, and the writer behind the substack, The Quiet Life with Susan Cain.
Susan shared a beautiful question two years ago, inspired by her grandfather who was a beloved rabbi in the United States who continued working even when in a wheelchair. Below, I am connecting you to the post in which Cain shares her thoughts on how to create a meaningful life:
Part of my dream here at L’chaim: The Jewish Letters Project is to collect more letters from the Jewish world. I am on a treasure hunt for them. If you’ve written a wisdom letter or received one from a grandparent, parent, aunt, uncle, cousin, or friend that you would like to share, please hit the purple button link below. If you have read a letter somewhere that you think is noteworthy, I would love to hear about it and read it. I just hired a translator for a letter written in Spanish, and I imagine I will hire more translators as I unearth more letters. These letters pop up in unexpected places. The letters may be in Yiddish, Russian, French, Hungarian, German, Hebrew, or other languages. I am working to unearth as many gems as possible.
I promise to read all the submissions. Letters that meet my criteria will be featured in future posts here at L’chaim: The Jewish Letters Project with your permission. My dream is to publish an anthology of letters from Jews around the world. I want the collection to feel like a global dinner party of letter writers sharing how they have created lives of meaning and purpose—whether in Hungary or France, in Italy or Israel, in Brazil or Bangkok.
